Over the years, single moms have been approaching me bemoaning how difficult life can be as a single parent. Recently I heard from single parents and think you would benefit from hearing what they have to say.

They ask me to write or address their particular plight. I have never taken any consideration to this until recently. On Saturday, 9th of April, I addressed people at the event that took place in Sunninghill. I had invited 4 people to give their testimonies. 3 of them were single parents. I had never met Sindi before and I met her for the first time at the event. I invited her because of this email which she sent.

Hi Phume

Wow what a book!

I am a single parent of 2 beautiful Souls 17 year old girl and a 4 year old boy working as a Rep.

May 2014 winding time between calls in Sasolburg I entered CNA. I came across one copy of this wonderful book “From Debt to Riches”. Then I was swimming in debt not even having money to buy a copy R130. By just reading the title it brought back hope in me that I can be out of debt which I put myself through.

I knew I can stop renting and own a home if I manage my money well. After 15 months following your advises from the book I paid off some personal loans and credit cards. I am still left with a few. I am soo glad to tell you I will be moving to my first home soon.

I am also at ease by the fact that one needs to start small and do it well.

I feel I need in depth on financial advice. How do I get a financial adviser?

Sindi

At the event, she shared a bit about her journey from debt to where she is today. She applied for a home loan and was declined on 2 occasions because of her debt. She continued to clear more debt and on the third application, she was finally granted a home loan.

The 2nd person who addressed the audience was Zanele. She too is a single mom with 3 kids. I met Zanele over a month ago when she wrote to me asking me if I could be her financial advisor. She also shared her story about how she read the book then decided to implement my suggestions. She is now totally debt free and is looking for a home to buy for herself and her 3 kids. I helped her to prepare for buying her home by giving her life cover to ensure that in case of an untimely death, her house gets paid up. She is also in her late 30s and after explaining to her the advantage of compound interest, she also took a retirement annuity. She is also investing in tax-free savings so that she has some funds available when her kids go to university. She would not have been able to do any of this if she was still heavily indebted. We are now busy putting her Last Will and Testament in place so that her kids are taken care of in case of her untimely death.

I hope these 2 testimonies will inspire you to do what it takes to get out of debt, if you are in debt, and to buy a home for yourself and your children and begin to invest money for your future and that of your children. I am convinced that being a single parent does not necessarily mean that you will live a life of financial hardship. If these two ladies could do it, you too can do it.

Please note that Sindi and Zanele got out of debt simply by reading the book and applying my suggestions. I met them after they had done what was necessary to get out of debt. I do not have to be physically there to help you get out debt. By merely reading the book and applying what is suggested, you can get out of debt. I do not do debt counselling.
