Closing the funding gap

Seminar to address the challenges entrepreneurs face

By Staff Writer

Published: 24 Feb, 2015 02:13 PM

The entrepreneurs’ struggle with securing funding is a long a difficult one.

Everything from lack of knowledge about various funding options, difficulties in meeting the set requirements, to connecting with the right funding institution or an individual financing an SME is not easy.

Pelmar Mamburu is a Soweto-born entrepreneur, she founded PELMAR Corporate Conferences and Events, an events management company. She is also an alumna of the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship.

Closing the gap

Mamburu says she saw first-hand the trials that many entrepreneurs in the country experience, including gaining access to seed funding.

“I’ve seen South African entrepreneurs struggle with lack of research on business information including funding, lack of appropriate business skills, and a lack of confidence to ask for assistance and also access to markets,” she says.

“Entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to meet face to face with experts from the funding companies”

This frustration is what led her to establish a series of funding seminars for entrepreneurs and SMEs, the first of which is set to take place in Braamfontien, Johannesburg.

Mamburu’s key focus for the seminar is to close the gap between entrepreneurs and funding institutions.

“Entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to meet face to face with experts from the funding companies. They will have an opportunity to interact directly with more than one funding specialist from funding companies,” she adds.

Knowledge bank

The funding seminars will feature speakers from various funding organisations. Attendees will also have an opportunity to network and share their business financial challenges and ideas with various organisations including Kalvenie Raja representing the IDC. Raja will be speaking on the types of funding IDC provides and how entrepreneurs can secure funding.

Also in attendance will be the Masisizane Fund, an initiative of Old Mutual. The fund focuses on small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) development and promotion of entrepreneurship. Mmathebe Lobega will be give attendees insight into the criteria that the fund uses to approve funding for entrepreneurs and SMEs.

Also presenting will be Phumelele Ndumo, a financial advisor and author of the book Debt to Riches and founder of ThuthukaSA, a financial management firm. She will be advising entrepreneurs on proper personal and business financial management.
