I studied for the Masters in Business Leadership with the hope of getting info on how to start a successful business but this is not what I got from the studies. So when I found out about the program, I thought let me try it out, this might be just what I need.

Was I so right this time around. In the last eight months, I have learned so much about how to make success of a business. Business success is something that we can all learn, it is a science. This is the kind of education that our country needs if entrepreneurship is to thrive in our country. Some of the most interesting stuff that I have learned so far is;

• You must know your numbers as a business person. What is your break-even point? How many customers do you have? Are you over dependent on a single customer? etc…
• Be bold, you have every right to know and to inspect your stock
• The importance of working on your business as opposed to in your business
• The importance of succession planning so you can take leave, and one day go on pension and let others run the business
• What is your exit strategy? I was blown away when I understood that the perfect exit strategy is to build a business that I can package and sell at a profit to others. It almost seems counterproductive but that is how true entrepreneurs ended up retiring very young and super wealthy
• Leaving your business to your kids might not be the way to go
• The importance of systems so your business can run efficiently and your customers can experience consistent service levels
• The importance of building the business that can operate without you because you need time to rest, spend with your loved ones, etc…
• Last but not least and certainly most importantly, how do you raise funding for your business? Fund raising is a science – you must know what kind of funds are most appropriate and where to go to apply for the funding and how to package your proposal to optimise your chances of getting the fund. Oh, that 3 – minute pitch, you must know how to pitch your business to potential investors, grab their attention and get the funds you need to grow your business.

So yes I am not yet done and I am actually falling behind other students due to work pressure and time constraints but hey, I give this course 10/10 for anyone who wants to make it in business.
